Adrenal Thyroid Dysfunction

Your adrenal glands play a central role in regulating and reacting to your body’s stress levels. When they are functioning properly, you are able to effectively bounce back from the day-to-day stresses that you encounter.
Your thyroid gland produces hormones that keep your body running optimally. It helps regulate your heart rate, nervous system, body weight, body temperature, and much more.

When they are functioning properly, you are able to effectively bounce back from the day-to-day stresses that you encounter.

Your thyroid gland produces hormones that keep your body running optimally. It helps regulate your heart rate, your nervous system, body weight, body temperature, and much, much more.

Adrenal dysfunction (also referred to as adrenal fatigue) occurs when you are under large amounts of stress, over longer periods of time, and your poor adrenals can’t keep up with your body’s demands.

This can lead to a decreased ability to cope with stressful situations, and a progressive, overwhelming feeling of stress. Additionally, adrenal dysfunction can result in decreased energy, low libido, increased PMS/menopausal symptoms, constipation, a weakened immune system (you catch every virus that goes around), salty or sweet food cravings, and not feeling fully rested even after a stellar night of sleep.

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism, or in Hashimoto’s disease) can make you feel tired, forgetful, depressed, cold, constipated, or can cause dry skin and hair loss.

People with both adrenal and thyroid dysfunction can be so fatigued that they often rely on stimulants, or massive amounts of caffeine, just to get through the day, yet still may not be able to sleep at night.

Since the symptoms of adrenal and thyroid dysfunction can be very similar, it is important to address the function of both.

Many physicians will overlook the adrenal glands and cortisol levels all together, and will dismiss clear hypothyroid symptoms in the face of only checking TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), and finding it in the “normal range”.

Did you know that the normal reference range for any given lab test is the range within 95% of the normal population falls? Hmmmm. Being healthier than only 5% of the American population does not sound reassuring, or at all healthy.

At Golden Road, however, Dr. Courtney believes you deserve to have your lab findings in the “optimal range” so that you can feel your very best! She will order your full thyroid panel to check the many factors that could be causing suboptimal thyroid functioning.

If your situation points more towards an adrenal dysfunction picture, she will order an Adrenal Stress Index test to monitor your cortisol levels over a 24-hour period.

If you have any of the symptoms above, make sure you are not overlooking sub-optimal thyroid or adrenal function!!
